Create Memorable Back to School Photos with These 5 Easy Tips

Back to school is just days away! I’m sure both parents and kids are excited to get back to the routine that the school year brings. The start of a school year marks the start of a new beginning and a milestone. And why not capture that milestone to have for years to come. Below I will list 5 tips to help parents capture their children on their first day back to school.

1. Capture the details.
All of us can remember back to school shopping as kids whether we enjoyed it or dreaded it. It’s a memory that has stuck with me. This is a chance to capture the details. Details like these give us feelings of nostalgia as our kids are wearing trends we use to as kids. This is a great chance to photograph new shoes, new hair bows, the backpack, etc.

2. Create a headshot.
Headshots aren’t just for adults in the workforce. I think this is a great way to capture how your kids grow and change every year. Keep it simple, and it the same location year after year. 3. Add friends
Do you have neighbors that your kids always ride the bus with ask them to join in! The people that help make school year memories should be captured and remembers too!

4. Is your kiddo camera shy?
Let’s face it, it can be hard as adults to sit still AND be comfortable in front of a camera. So imagine being an excited and nervous kid on the first day of school. So make it easy on yourself and them by capturing candids. You’ll probably get a few of them looking at the camera and they will be natural.

Here are a few scenes to capture candids:
– Catch them walking to the bus
– Packing their backpack

5. Get yourself in the frame!
As the parent it’s great to have images of kids, you probably have tons in your phone already. But why not also create an image they will want to cherish when they get older, as something to look back on. My favorite images are ones that feature they ones I love, not just me by myself.

The Vickers, A Family Portrait Session at the Trumbull Historical Society, Trumbull, CT

I met the Vickers at Jones Farm but the skies opened up showering us with rain right before our session was to start. We decided to meet another day and I think it was work the wait. We met at the Trumbull Historical Society in Trumbull, CT. It was a clear and sunny day and the barns were decorated for Christmas, a perfect setting to capture a few family photos. Hope you enjoy the gallery below!

The Navarro Family Session at Trumbull Historical Society, Trumbull, CT

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Trumbull Historical Society in Trumbull, Connecticut. It had been months since I been there and I was a little worried how “picturesque” it would be towards the end of December. But all my fears disappearing when I pulled in a spotted the barn decorated with two beautiful wreaths. It was just picture perfect. The Trumbull Historial Society never disappoints!

I met the Navarro family for a family matnerity session as Jessica was due to give birth any moment. We capture some sweet family photos before baby arrived.

Balcastro Tree Farm Family Session at Jones Family Tree Farm, Shelton, CT

Happy New Year! Although 2018 has come to a close I still have so much from 2018 to share.

In a previous post I shared with you Jones’ Family Tree Farm, it’s hands down in my top favorites places to shoot, especially around the holidays. Jones is well known for their winery, strawberry and pumpkin picking. There is something to do year round at Jones, I hope to go back a lot more this year.

I met the Balcastros for a quick tree farm session. Their daughter Gia brought the holiday cheer and sass. Together we made some great shots. Check out a few images below!

The Year in Review

I cannot believe that 2018 is coming to a close in just a few short days. It’s true the older you get the faster time goes by. With that in mind, I thought I would take a moment and reflect on all the I have accomplished this year.

2018 was HUGE for me in terms of photography. For years, I struggled with finding a niche, really narrowing it down to what type of photography I really wanted to dive into and give my all. But throughout this year I found that I really do enjoy capturing people and documenting their smiles. And although I found my niche there is still so much more work to be done, skills to be learned, and practice to be had. But overall I’m excited to see what 2019 has in store for me and my business and I look forward to growing and improving.

Wishing all my clients the happiest of New Years.

Goad Family Session at Jones Family Tree Farm, Shelton, CT

It’s officially winter here in New England, at least it feels like it. Although winter is slowly moving in there is still plenty of time to capture a few more outdoor sessions. A lot of families this time of year love to venture out to tree farms and capture moment of themselves posed by rows of trees and even them choosing their tree.

I met the Goad family at Jones Tree Farm in Shelton, CT for their annual family photos! Jones Tree Farm is a great place to get all of your Christmas tree needs in one place, everything from the tree to ornaments, and even your door wreath. Did I mention the farm is huge. HUGE!

It was such a treat to meet them their be part of their annual family tradition. Check out some great shots from their tree farm session below. Click here to view the entire gallery!

Sandin Family Session at Beardsley’s Orchard and Cider Mill, Shelton, CT

Fall has come in so quickly this year. It seems as though it gets shorter and shorter every year which is disappointing as Fall is one of my favorite seasons. When planning ideas of Fall mini sessions I decided to host them at a local orchard. What’s better than hot apple cider, warm cider donuts, and views of endless rows of sweet bright red apples? I hosted three families at Beardsley’s Orchards and Cider Mill in Shelton, CT. Here are a few images from the Sandin Family! Click here to view the full gallery.

Tim’s Family Session at Beardsley’s Orchard and Cider Mill, Shelton, CT

Fall is finally begining to settle in here in New England. My goal for next year is to offer my clients more styled shoots and I thought starting this Fall would be a great oppourtunity to try this new concept out. I offered Fall inspired mini sessions held at Beardsley Orchard and Cider Mill this first go around. It was great to see everyone come dressed in some of their Fall bests! Children had the chance to pick their own apples and fill baskets we could use during the shoot. Beardsley is a beautiful apple orchard located in Shelton, CT. They offer several apple varieties, ciders, and of course cider donuts all sold on site in their farm store. If your local or in the area I highly recommend stoping in a visiting them!

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing galleries that took place at Beardsley. Enjoy the gallery below of the Tims’ family. Full gallery coming soon!
